Newly elected chairs and next meeting
Although the election of chairs was initially scheduled for later in the meeting, it was decided to move it forward due to the fact that the voting on the Schedule amendment to establish the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary (SAWS) and the five resolutions under consideration will take place in a single session.
As the current chair, Amadou Telivel Diallo of the Republic of Guinea, was unable to attend the meeting due to visa issues, the vice-chair, Dr Nick Gales of Australia, has been chairing the proceedings. Following a proposal by Australia, Dr Gales was unanimously confirmed as the chair of the International Whaling Commission for the 2024-2026 term. Additionally, upon the proposal of St Lucia, Dr Urbain Brito of Benin was elected as vice-chair of the Commission.

The Commission accepted Australia’s offer to host the 70th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC70) in 2026. The city and venue will be announced at a later stage.
