The status of cetaceans under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) – An ArcGIS StoryMap
Whales and dolphins (cetaceans) are a group of animals which have long been a matter of controversy: are they to be fully protected or can they also be utilised as a source of food? For decades this dispute has paralysed the International Whaling Commission (IWC).
What is less known is the status of cetaceans under another, if not significantly larger, convention: the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES; also known as Washington Convention).
To shed some light on the matter, this StoryMap tells the story of whales and CITES.
